Washington DC, USA: Sikh Human rights groups; Voices for Freedom (VFF) and Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) partner in launching a global online petition today to cancel Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the White House later this year. (Please see Petition at http://wh.gov/lMWVf)

In 2005, Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India, was banned from entering the United States due to his failure to stop a series of deadly riots in 2002 that resulted in the death of thousands of Muslims in the Indian state of Gujarat, where he was Chief Minister.

The US Department of State and the US Commission for International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) invoked a little -known U.S. law passed in 1998. That law makes foreign officials responsible for “severe violations of religious freedom” ineligible for visas and entering the United States.  Mr. Modi is the only foreign official whose visa was ever denied under this provision.

According to USCIRF’s 2013 Annual Report, “due to his complicity in 2002, riots broke out which resulted in the deaths of an estimated 1,100 to 2,000 Muslims”. The horrific violence erupted between the Hindus and Muslims, and was the result of Modi’s willful neglect of duty and use of hate speech to incite violence.

In June, President Barack Obama called Mr. Modi to congratulate him for leading his party to win the Indian General Election and extended an invitation to him to visit the White House.

Instead of hosting Modi at the White House, the United States government should condemn Modi for perpetrating violence against minorities in India.  Join us to bring American justice into action by signing the global petition at – http://wh.gov/lMWVf.
