(Mohali, India) December 11, 2013

Voices for Freedom, congratulates and thank everyone for signing, sharing and promoting our online petition for Gurbakash Singh’s immediate and unconditional release from his forceful and illegal arrest.

On December 7, Voices for Freedom launched a petition against Panjab Police’s forceful and unlawful removal of Gurbakash Singh, a sikh rights activist, from Amb Sahib Gurdwara (an historical Sikh place of worship in Mohali, Panjab) on 5th December 2013. He has been on a hunger strike since 14th Nov 2013 to support the release of long-term Sikh prisoners.

The petition questioned and highlighted, violating and unlawful procedure followed by Punjab Police to arrest Gurbakash Singh during his peaceful protest. The petition also discussed how the arrest violated his Fundamental rights.

Where on one side, VFF petitioned for Gurbakash Singh’s immediate and unconditional release this Sikh activist, despite of his arrest continued his hunger strike in Ropar Jail. In prison, his health started deteriorating and with an apprehension that almost 30 days of hunger strike has affected Gurbakash’s kidneys, he was shifted to PGI Hospital, Chandigarh, India.  However, since all of his medical reports were all right and the state government smelled a strong backlash of this illegal arrest, Gurbakash was  unconditionally released.

After Gurbakash Singh’s release, VFF says “thank you everyone for singing, sharing and raising his or her voice for “IMMEDIATE AND UNCONDITIONAL RELEASE OF GURBAKASH SINGH”. We also appreciate and thank all the Sikh and Human Rights organizations for their support and standing with VFF in this noble cause.

Though, the petition for the brave Gurbakash Singh’s unconditional and immediate release has been successfully completed, Voices for Freedom continues its work of raising voice against the grave human rights violations in India.  VFF with the objective to create an atmosphere where everyone is heard and respected, moves to 2nd Phrase of the campaign and “SUPPORT THE RELEASE OF LONG TERM SIKH PRISONERS

Thus, Voices for Freedom invites all the national and international bodies to work together so that the sense of deprivation and the series of discrimination may be brought to end.
