Los Angeles, CA – A 70-year-old Sikh man, Harpal Singh, is in critical condition after a brutal assault in North Hollywood on August 4. The incident occurred while he was on his daily walk near the Sikh Gurdwara of Los Angeles.
According to a statement from the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), the victim was assaulted by 44-year-old Bo Richard Vitagliano. Police reports indicate that an altercation began between the two men, but the suspect, allegedly continued to attack Mr. Singh even after he had fallen to the ground.
Witnesses intervened by yelling at the suspect, who then fled the scene on his bicycle. Paramedics transported Mr. Singh to a local hospital, where he was treated for a skull fracture and potential brain trauma. He has since undergone multiple surgeries and remains in critical condition.
The LAPD announced the arrest of Vitagliano, who they have identified as an “unhoused” individual with an extensive criminal record. While the Sikh community and advocacy groups have called for a hate crime investigation, the LAPD has stated that they are not currently treating the case as such. The investigation is ongoing.
