Sikh and Human Rights activist Bhai Resham Singh has been released on bail today from illegal detention from Amritsar jail, Punjab, India. He is released after spending 45 days in prison where he was mentally and psychologically tortured. Talking about his arrest and detention, Bhai Resham Singh says, “ It was a very hard time for me. The Indian government does not treat people in prison like human beings. We are harassed, threatened, and are illegally arrested for raising our voice. I will continue to fight against injustice and for equal rights for all”
Resham Singh was arrested by Indian authorities on November 4, 2016, at New Delhi airport for sedition regarding Sarbat Khalsa, 2015.
Following his arrest, we raised our concerns regarding Mr. Singh’s rights and health with the US Department of State. We also started the White House petition for the safe return of Bhai Resham Singh from India and had gained over 5600 signatures in first few days. On behalf of Voices For Freedom, we would like to thank everyone who signed, promoted and shared the petition.
Mr. Singh’s arrest was in violation of several Indian and International laws, like, right of freedom of speech and expression, right to life, freedom of assembly, freedom of torture and due process, these rights, also known as fundamental rights are guaranteed under Article 14, 19, 20, and 21 of the Indian Constitution. While in custody, he was held in shackles and suffered several mental and psychological torture.
We would like to thank everyone who signed the petition, Shrimoni Akali Dal (Mann), USA, members of all the Gurudwaras, all Sikh & human rights organizations, civil rights groups activists and members of the media for fighting for Mr. Singh’s release. Thank you to Bhai Resham Singh and his family for allowing us to share his story and for his courage to stand against injustice. Thank you for your faith and prayers.
